Montessori discipline is a very touchy subject.
Many people avoid it because discipline itself is kind of a taboo topic.
But it is VERY important to talk about it.
And it is even more important to discuss discipline the Montessori way
Why?
Because it is going to be something you want to implement if you are making an effort to live a Montessori lifestyle.
So, let’s discuss three ways to incorporate it in your lesson planning and in your everyday awareness.
If you are looking to building a centered, organized Montessori Guide in yourself, nurture happy, normalized children and want to create smooth, successful Montessori days, then you are in the right place!
Let me know in comments what you know about this topic, what you have applied, what you have tried that worked, what you have tried that didn’t work and if you have any questions as we get into this training.
In this training, I will give you three very important categories in discipline to pay attention to in order to do discipline the Montessori way.
As you watch or listen to this training, know that you will be able to get more information than what is included in this blog post.
I really want to encourage you to take the time to watch or listen and take notes.
This will be helpful to you now and in the future.
#1 LIMITS: Set boundaries that make sense
Many Montessori teachers are hands-off when it comes to discipline in terms of a child acting out.
They only focus on the discipline of the Montessori works themselves.
By this, I mean the ins and outs of the careful preparation and steps to using a work.
But what about the Montessori approach to discipline in behavior?
Well, it is an essential part of the puzzle that you do not want to ignore or neglect.
As you fill out your Montessori Planner or teacher planner, be sure to keep track of boundaries that you have set in a child’s behavior.
This can be a boundary in terms of how many times you will repeat a request or how long you will ‘argue’ a specific situation.
Be consistent with these boundaries and be very firm, especially as you are trying to establish it.
“We must help the child to act for himself, will for himself, think for himself; this is the art of those who aspire to serve the spirit.” ― Maria Montessori
#2 FORM: Teach about societal scaffolding
In the multi-aged classrooms, you might have a little bit of a harder time with this point.
This is because not only are you dealing with children that come from different cultures, different lifestyles, different beliefs, different religions, but you are also dealing with different ages.
But it is definitely doable. Just keep an eye on this point in particular and you will be golden.
As you use your Montessori planner with weekly plans, be sure to have a list of things in society that are acceptable in a general sense, without stepping on people’s toes or treading on controversial ground.
Things that I suggest are, for example, passing gas, belching, not paying attention when someone is talking, not responding to a person that is talking directly to them, etc.
“Preventing war is the work of politicians, establishing peace is the work of educationists.” ― Maria Montessori
#3 CONSEQUENCES: Discuss the effects of natural consequences
In Montessori schools, you have to have a certain set of consequences such as sending a child to the main teacher, the principal or whatever you call the person that runs the school.
But you need to show children what natural consequences are.
This is so important because this is what life is really about.
I cannot stress enough how much you need to reiterate over and over that the word “consequence” doesn’t necessarily mean that something bad happens.
No. There are good consequences and bad consequences.
Give examples of these in things relevant to them so children understand it and can relate to them.
Be open to get examples from them, if they have any.
Also, be sure to teach children the term “natural consequence” and explain what that means.
In your lesson planner or homeschool planner, include a list of examples of natural consequences that children might understand.
For example, if you overeat, a natural consequence is that you get a tummy ache.
If you stay up all night, a natural consequence is that you will be tired and grumpy the next morning.
See the pattern?
“Such prizes and punishments are, if I may be allowed the expression, the bench of the soul, the instrument of slavery for the spirit.” ― Maria Montessori, The Montessori Method Scientific Pedagogy as Applied to Child Education in ‘The Children’s Houses’ with Additions and Revisions by the Author
In Conclusion
You need to know that in Montessori education, there IS a Montessori way of doing discipline.
I have shown you only three points to keep in mind in your weekly planner.
Be sure to include those here and there, but consistently and regularly.
This is a very important topic that you CANNOT ignore or neglect.
