Acts of service are very important in the Montessori approach.
Both in doing Montessori at home and at a Montessori school, grace and courtesy and promoting peace are essential things.
These topics are as important as academic topics.
Why?
Because these topics change the world.
If you are looking to building a centered, organized Montessori Guide in yourself, nurture happy, normalized children and want to create smooth, successful Montessori days, then you are in the right place!
Let me know in comments what you know about this topic, what you have applied, what you have tried that worked, what you have tried that didn’t work and if you have any questions as we get into this training.
In this training, we will be talking about three different ways of doing acts of service the Montessori way.
As you watch or listen to this training, know that you will be able to get more information than what is included in this blog post.
I really want to encourage you to take the time to watch or listen and take notes.
This will be helpful to you now and in the future.
#1 Cook or Bake for Friends and Family
There are many Montessori activities that are not overtly academic, but they really are.
If you think about it, The Montessori Method has two very unique subjects that are not seen as academic, but are essential to life.
These two subjects, Practical Life and Sensorial, are not common to other educational methods.
In your home environment or Montessori environment, you can learn so much through learning to bak and cook.
For one, Math is used for measurements, oven temperature, using a timer, etc.
Practical Life kicks in when it comes to cutting ingredients, washing fruits and vegetables and so on.
Young children will love getting involved in activities like these, especially knowing that the receivers of the food or baked goods will also receive love.
“Only through freedom and environmental experience is it practically possible for human development to occur.” Maria Montessori
#2 Teach children to write notes or letters and deliver to loved one and strangers
In the age of a lack of physical touch due to social distancing, we can shift our focus from giving and receiving gifts to writing words of affirmation to those we love.
You see, words have a lot of power… both for good and bad…
Imagine how fun it would be to set up tables and chairs, nice stationery and pens or markers and invite children to a special activity.
That activity is is still follow Montessori principles, even though you are bypassing the original Montessori materials.
Teach children to write friendly letters, taking the time to brainstorm words of affirmation and to really think about each person they are writing letters to.
The can also dictate the letter to you and they can copy the message for friends, loved ones and even strangers.
That’s right!
Why not write some sweet letters for children at the local children’s hospital or for the local homeless shelter?
What about writing letters to children whose parent is in prison or an elderly person alone in a senior home?
“Free the child’s potential and you will transform him into the world.” Maria Montessori
#3 Promote peace in your home, community and the world
Maybe it will be hard to include a Montessori toddler into the first two ideas, but I didn’t want to keep them out of this very important task.
So I made sure that they could be included into this third point.
Promoting peace does have to do with conflict resolution, helping with household chores and other things, but don’t forget this:
Promoting peace starts at home, but it doesn’t stay at home.
It MUST spread into our communities and the world.
When you think about it, you can show and teach young children how to promote peace in different scenarios.
Show them by example.
Show them love, acceptance, empathy, helpfulness and generosity.
Talk about these words.
Talk about what peace means and what it doesn’t mean.
If you want ideas, the bundle below will provide you with a printable list of ideas for promoting peace, along with information about the Price Table (conflict resolution the Montessori way), etc.
Take a look!
“Children are human beings to whom respect is due, superior to us by reason of their innocence and of the greater possibilities of their future… Let us treat them with all the kindness which we would wish to help to develop in them.” Maria Montessori
In Conclusion
Now that you have some things to think about, what are you going to implement or try first?
What do you think your children will enjoy most out of these three ideas?
