Don’t you think that they are cuter than store-bought Valentines? My children and I think so and it was such a great idea for an afternoon when we felt like playing with paint and play dough. To get started, follow the instructions on how to make salt dough HERE. Use a small (1-inch) heart-shaped cookie cutter to make hearts out of the salt dough.

I let my children make their famous DIY Valentines by kids with just their fingers and a q-tip. I provided a rag for each of them to wipe the paint off their fingers before using a new color. They had fun being as crazy or as intricate with the control of their fingers and q-tips. I saw them exercising dexterity and fine motor skills.

While they painted, I used my guillotine to cut the colored paper sheets. To make the cards. I folded some of the cards, but my son helped me after he was done painting. I took a few minutes to teach my daughter (who is 4 years old) how to fold a piece of paper by matching the corners as accurately as possible.

Because the hearts are made out of salt dough and the salt dough is porous, they dried pretty quickly. They squeezed a big drop of tacky glue in the middle of each card and they picked each heart that was supposed to go on each card. Then, we discussed the main messages that would go on the outside of the card, by the hearts.

We came up with “I (heart) you,” “You make my (heart) beat,” “My (heart) beats 4 u,” “I (heart) your friendship,” “My (heart) is yours,” etc. With the permanent markers, they wrote the messages they liked best. Once they are dry and ready, we will make a list of the friends they want to give a Valentine to and start writing inside the cards and signing them.
