Do you know when your child has an open Sensitive Period for a specific Math topic?
This is important because the child will learn so much better and faster.
Not only that, but your life will be so much easier since your indirect preparation of Montessori Math lessons that your child is ready to learn.
Do not fall for the fake idea that children should be put in a box and are supposed to learn a certain thing at a certain time and at a certain age.
No! The Montessori Method DOES NOT work that way.
No matter what Mathematical concepts you are including from your Montessori curriculum, whether it’s sandpaper numerals, the Decimal System or Addition and Subtraction, you need to observe the child and determine what they are ready for.
This will come with two things: time and observation.
If you are looking to building a centered, organized Montessori Guide in yourself, nurture happy, normalized children and want to create smooth, successful Montessori days, then you are in the right place!
Let me know in comments what you know about this topic, what you have applied, what you have tried that worked, what you have tried that didn’t work and if you have any questions as we get into this training.
In this training, we will be discussing some Montessori Math materials that you can buy that will make all the difference in how children learn.
You won’t want to miss it!
As you watch or listen to this training, know that you will be able to get more information than what is included in this blog post.
I really want to encourage you to take the time to watch or listen and take notes.
This will be helpful to you now and in the future.
Caution: The following materials are original Montessori Math materials that contain beads. They can pose a choking hazard and therefore, adult attention must always be given when the child is using them.
#1 Small or Large Bead Frame
There are many things that you can do with Montessori Math materials because of their hands-on sensorial impressions on children.
You can use them alone or combine them with other subjects such as Montessori Practical Life or Sensorial material.
Regardless, you need to know something extremely important that makes Montessori Math different from school Math:
Montessori materials are concrete materials.
That means that they are kinesthetic in nature, especially with young children ages younger than 6.
After age 6, children are starting to move into more abstract concepts in Math and other topics.
One of the first Montessori Math materials that children will want to start using when they are counting and adding as well as subtracting is the Large Bead Frame.
Another name for the Small or Large Bead Frame is an abacus.
This is a great work to have is because it is so versatile.
You can use it for so many different things in Montessori Math.
Watch the video training above to learn how you can use it to teach a child to add larger numbers.
Children display a universal love of mathematics, which is par excellence the science of precision, order, and intelligence. ~Maria Montessori
#2 Golden Bead Set
Whether you are a natural Math teacher or not, once you understand the power of the Montessori Math materials, you will gain so much confidence in this scary and intimidating subject.
Another wonderful Montessori Math work that I love for its versatility is the Golden Bead Set.
This is mainly used for introducing, practicing and mastering the Decimal System.
But I also use it for counting, adding and subtracting and much more.
Not only are these bead materials beautiful, but they also come in different presentations.
The different presentations are mainly different in terms of price, not necessarily that the learning is different in any way.
Take a look at several types of the golden beads set.
There are the real glass beads, the plastic beads, the painted beads on wood and the printable ones.
You can decide what to get based on budget, space and what is aesthetically pleasing in Your Montessori environment.
Great creations come from the mathematical mind, so we must always consider all that is mathematical as a means of mental development.
It is certain that mathematics organize the abstract path of the mind, so we must offer it at an early age, in a clear and very accessible manner, as a stimulus to the child whose mind is yet to be organized. ~Maria Montessori
#3 Bear Cabinet
This is, I confess, one of our biggest Montessori purchase, literally.
It is HUGE! You can see it behind me in all of my live trainings.
But we love it! Why?
Because it is so beautiful and we can use it for so many things!
With these Montessori Mathematics materials, children can learn skip counting (5, 10, 15, 20, etc), multiples (of 2, 3, 4, etc), squares (1×1, 2×2, 3×3, 4×4, etc) and cubes (1x1x1, 2x2x2, 3x3x3, 4x4x4, etc).
These Montessori Math beads are a beautiful concrete way of learning and it is one of the main foundations to all of the Montessori learning.
This system in which a child is constantly moving objects with his hands and actively exercising his senses, also takes into account a child’s special aptitude for mathematics.
When they leave the material, the children very easily reach the point where they wish to write out the operation.
They can thus carryout an abstract mental operation and acquire a kind of natural and spontaneous inclination for mental calculations. ~Maria Montessori
