Just like Practical Life is a unique and exclusive subject in the Montessori curriculum, so is the subject called Sensorial.
Sensorial activities involve the five senses in children, helping them with many very important skills.
Most of these Sensorial lessons and skills help improve life, independence and even survival.
Some of these skills are visual discrimination, eye-hand coordination, fine motor skills and more.
The Montessori Method gave much attention and emphasis on this important subject and that is why we need to talk about it.
If you are looking to becoming a centered, organized Montessori Guide, nurture happy, normalized children and want to create smooth, successful Montessori days, then you are in the right place!
Let me know in comments what you know about this topic, what you have applied, what you have tried that worked, what you have tried that didn’t work and if you have any questions as we get into this training.
In this training we will answer an essential question: Why are Montessori sensorial works so important for children?
This is so you can gain a better understanding of this fantastic subject when you implement it in your Montessori environment.
Some Montessori Sensorial materials in the prepared environment are: Red Rods, Color Tablets, Binomial Cube and Pink Tower.
Each one has a main aim (area of focus), which will be one of the 9 categories in the Sensorial subject.
We will discuss what these 9 categories are in later trainings.
But for now, you need to walk away from this training knowing why these works are so important, ok?
As you watch or listen to this training, know that you will be able to get more information than what is included in this blog post.
I really want to encourage you to take the time to watch or listen and take notes.
This will be helpful to you now and in the future.
Why are Montessori Sensorial works so important for children?
#1 The five senses must be included because they are vital
Dr. Montessori conducted countless observations of children and determined that the Sensorial subject was very important.
Not only was it vital to include it in the Montessori classroom, but it was imperative that there are sensorial areas that include activities that target all five senses.
Of course, the five senses are: sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing.
You don’t have to focus on all five senses at all times, but you do make sure to keep track of what works you put out so you can keep them balanced and not do too many of one sense and neglect other senses.
Montessori schools and home Montessori activities can be the same.
You just need to keep in mind how many children you are working with and put out enough works for children to be able to get a turn to work with these Sensorial works.
“The task of the educator lies in seeing that the child does not confound good with immobility and evil with activity.” ― Maria Montessori
Why are Montessori Sensorial works so important for children?
#2 Children assimilate the mental and emotional through the physical
Montessori teachers and parents must understand this deeply if they wish to really help children reach their fullest potential.
This is because children learn best with kinesthetic or hands-on materials.
As I have mentioned this in past trainings, they must focus on concrete before moving onto the abstract.
Please don’t do paper and pencil (abstract) until they have shown clear mastery of the concrete.
They will, on their own, show you when they are ready to step away from the hands-on Montessori materials.
Usually, this is on or around age six.
So, let me encourage you to keep encouraging hands-on, kinesthetic, sensory works that are attractive and pleasing to the eye.
Make sure that there is a direct aim (or learning goal) for each work and that you do visit all nine categories of the Sensorial subject to keep it balanced.
“We shall walk together on this path of life, for all things are part of the universe and are connected with each other to form one whole unity.” ― Maria Montessori
Why are Montessori sensorial works so important for children?
#3 They refine children’s understanding of the world
Montessori education is truly a genius program.
The senses play an essential and quite unique role on how children will understand the world that they live in.
Sensorial materials help refine children’s understanding of the world by stimulating and provoking their 5 senses.
Everything begins with the senses and children will benefit greatly when they are able to refine them.
Why? Because when they are learning about topics such as heat, coldness, colors and color grading, weight differences and things like that, you will always be observing.
Through these observations, which are more important than you know, will give you a boatload of treasures on how you can set up your environment, what children are ready for and what they have mastered.
“Respect all the reasonable forms of activity in which the child engages and try to understand them.” ― Maria Montessori
In Conclusion
I know that this training will get you thinking more about including Sensorial works in your Montessori environment.
