Essential Skills for Reading Success

When we started our review of Ultimate Phonics Reading Program by Spencer Learning, wow. We quickly realized that this program met all of the essential skills for reading success without the fluff and “scenic route.” It is to the point and straight forward.

This is what my daughter likes and I think this is why she enjoys using this program. What I like about it is that with it, she will find reading success in life at the tender age of four. Read on to find out why this program is different and successful with children like my daughter.

Ultimate Phonics Reading Program offers keys to reading success in a factual and to-the-point manner. My daughter doesn’t like lessons that drag on and on with a lot of fluff and long stories that make the lessons longer. She like to go “Wham, Bam, Thank you, Ma’am” and be done, if you know what I mean. My girl is four and a half and interested in reading, but it has to be done in shorter spurts. This program is perfect because, even though the lessons are short, we always finish feeling like she took something from it and learned to read better.

Let me tell you the steps to reading success using this program. The program has over 7,000 pages divided into 262 lessons and there are six types of pages: Pattern pages, Idea pages, Word List pages, Word pages, Sight Word pages and Sentence pages. Within these pages, you will find a pattern or idea page (like a letter name and sound) and you will also find a set of word list pages (you can see an example in the picture below).

There is also a set of word pages to read aloud or, when the mouse is hovered over, you can hear the letter sound and/or the entire word read. For the first lessons, we would hover over the letters and then the words to introduce my daughter to reading. But now, I tell her to read the letter sounds and the words and then to hover over to confirm that she read them correctly. It is great to be able to do it one way and then the other as they grow more confident in reading. This is definitely going to help her in reading success in life!

On the Road to Reading Success

These essential skills for reading success would not be complete with including a set of sentence pages. You can see an example below. These sentences range in level of difficulty. I like that we can hover over each word to hear it read. Then we can also click on the sound icon to hear the entire sentence read aloud.

At first, we would hover over each word to hear it and repeat it. Then we would listen to each sentence be read aloud to repeat it. Now, my daughter has been successful in the beginning stages of reading. Taking her time, she will read the words (sound them out, say them more fluently and then read the sentence in its entirety). She will then hover and click to hear them out as an interactive form of answer key.

Having said all that, the keys to reading success offered by this program are suitable for all levels of reading since it is self-paced and to the point. It is great for fluent readers and for emerging readers. It is also great for beginning readers and for learning disabled children, too.

It is a serious program that doesn’t waste time with fluff. When we sit to do a lesson, we do it, go through it, learn, practice and we are done. No cartoons or sing songs talk. Just lessons.
