if you have been looking for a Science curriculum for homeschoolers from a Christian perspective, then definitely take a look at our review of Introductory Science by Science Shepherd! We have been using it almost daily for about 5 weeks now and we have been learning a lot with it. Let me tell you what sets Science Shepherd’s curriculum apart from others. Read on. 🙂
Science Curriculum for Homeschoolers {from a Christian perspective}
First of all, rest assured that, beyond a shadow of a doubt, Science Shepherd is a Chrisitian curriculum. I really appreciate that! Not many Science curricula follow a fully scientific and fully Christian scope and sequence. Pretty much every lessons mentions God and how He is the Creator of this beautiful universe. This is important to me. I like for it to be clear to my children about the origins of this universe and its contents.
From what I have seen, they embrace the young earth Creation account, which means that they believe the earth is younger than 10,000 years old. When they talk about the Flood, dinosaurs, rock formations and even the Ice Age, it all indicates that they come from a young earth perspective. I thought to point that out, in case you are more of an old earth creationist.
For this year, we specifically used Introductory Science with Book A. It is a complete, 35-week Science curriculum. It is geared toward children 6-8. My son is six and my daughter is four. We all sit to watch the videos and to make the experiments together, but my son is the one completing the workbook.
Each lesson comes with an on-demand 2 to 5-minute lesson, which is the bulk of the curriculum. I really enjoy having the short videos so loaded with information in an interactive and entertaining way. They hold my children’s attention very, very well and they are learning a lot. Like I said, Book A is for ages 6-8, but they also have Book B for older kids.
So, for example, let’s say you have a 6-year old and a 9-year old. They can watch the video together and then each fills out their workbook. The younger would use Book A and the older would use Book B. Then they can make the activities/experiments together. Isn’t that easy and fun?! I love the mix of short technology, short paper and pencil and the hands-on aspect of each lesson.
Science Shepherd is a smart Science curriculum. In our experience with Introductory Science, we can begin and end the video and workbook activity in about 10 minutes! That’s it! There are no more excuses to not do Science/Bible class!
Some of the activities/experiments come with video demonstrations, so, if one day you are in a hurry and cannot do the activity, you can still watch the short video for your children to see the hands-on activity. If you do have the time, you can prepare the materials the night before, simply by consulting the Supply List ahead of time.
Science Shepherd makes it easy for you. You can buy all of the items separately so you can mix and match levels and materials. For Introductory Science, in our experience, we are using the on-demand video course, book A and the answer key, but on their website they list all of these items: video course, book A, answer key A, book B, answer key B and Course Extension.
Take a look at the Scope & Sequence for the first nine weeks of Introductory Science: Creation, Observing, comparing, sequencing, classifying, planning, measuring, labeling, predicting, experimenting, using/making models, concluding, reporting, instruments, the scientific method, atmosphere, weather, precipitation, water cycle, Temperature, seasons, Storms, thunder, lightning, wind, tornadoes, hurricanes, the Great Flood, layers, rock, soil, landscapes, volcanoes, ice age, glaciers, earthquakes, erosion, fossils, fossil fuels, dinosaurs, just to name a few.
