6 Calming Child-Safe Essential Oils and their Uses
You might wonder, among all the essential oils available, which ones are specifically safe for children?
Below is a list of some essential oils uses for calming children.
- Lavender essential oil uses
Lavender has essential oil benefits known for its calming effect that helps stimulate relaxation and sleep.
This essential oil has properties that can treat nerve issues as well.
If your children are experiencing insomnia, you may also use lavender oil on them.
Are they jittery before a test? Lavender oil may also be the answer to calm your child’s nerves.
Studies show that lavender essential oil can increase their mental activity and decrease anxiety and mental stress.
However, if you are to use it on children with attention and autoimmune issues, do test a small amount on them first as they may react negatively to it. Should there be a negative reaction, discontinue use.
- Ylang-Ylang
The ylang-ylang flower is known for its antidepressant properties.
This essential oil fights off the blues and other emotional problems through its soothing scent.
This is one of the best-smelling essential oils for kids to enjoy while benefitting from it.
Ylang-ylang essential oil strengthens the brain. It also gives the body a natural boost of energy.
Ylang-ylang has euphoric properties that can help your child’s brain relax, consequently relieving him/her of stress, anxiety, and tension.
- Cedarwood
Essential oil from cedarwood promotes tension, stress, and anxiety reduction.
Due to its sedative properties, cedarwood essential oil can help with sleeping problems.
This essential oil soothes the mind without causing drowsiness.
It releases serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates one’s sleep-wake cycle and internal body clock.
Serotonin is also responsible for feelings of happiness and maintaining mood balance, which is why it is called the happy oil.
- Orange essential oil uses
Essential oil of Mandarin oranges is primarily used for children.
This essential oil is known for inducing relaxation, therefore lowering stress and anxiety levels.
In addition, orange oil is helpful for improving blood circulation.
It is useful for children with episodes of hysteria or epileptic seizures.
- Frankincense essential oil uses
This oil is said to have a calming effect on children’s anxiety and anger.
It has sedative properties to induce mental relaxation and peace in kids.
For added safety, you should use a pure Frankincese oil, like this one.
- Vetiver essential oil uses
Like lavender and cedarwood, vetiver, also known as khus oil, is known for promoting better sleep.
Its calming effect on the brain and nervous system makes it the ideal essential oil for hyperactive children, especially those with attention and hyperactivity problems.
Use this oil to soothe your child’s anger, irritability, and anxiety, while at the same time inducing better concentration and behavior.
Proper Applications of Essential Oils for Children
- Massage
The essential oil must be diluted first with the carrier oil (such as coconut oil) before application on your child’s skin because he/she might develop rashes or have an adverse skin reaction.
With 1 to 2 drops, you can massage areas of the body such as the neck, forehead, chest, abdomen, and extremities.
If you want to use the essential oil as a hot or cold compress, simply soak the towel in the water then add a few drops of the oil and apply to the areas mentioned above.
- Spray
Diluted essential oil may be placed in a spray bottle for use around your home.
You may use this also for your child’s room by simply spraying it on his/her bed and pillow, particularly if he/she has difficulties in sleeping.
- Roll-on
Diluted essential oil is placed in a roll-on bottle to prevent spillage.
Apply some on the wrists and other pressure points of the body.
This can also serve as an alternative to massaging — just use the roller to apply gentle pressure on areas that need to be soothed.
- Diffusion
Diffusion is the best way to introduce essential oils to your children.
This is also the safest way to see how your child will react to specific types of oil.
Using your water-based vaporizers or air freshener equipment, put in a few drops of the oil in the vaporizer and start the diffusion process.
Allow your child to be exposed to the vaporizer/freshener for no more than 30 minutes to prevent overwhelming his/her senses.
For your child’s safety, never put or apply essential oil on sensitive areas of the body such as the skin around the eyes, inner ears, wounds, and broken/damaged skin.

Thanks for sharing info about the oils, I knew a few but there are some good ones! My poor little one deals with a lot of anger and anxiety so we are always looking for ways to help. As for why winning would be awesome? After looking at the company, there are some really great supplies that would make making blends and taking them on the go so much easier so we can keep the right oils on hand all the time for myself and my son. They definitely have some cool stuff. That penguin terracotta necklace would be awesome for my little penguin lover to treasure while calming down (without having to know that the calming oils are right there).
