They have a special significance and as we add them to our tree each year, we see older ones on there and we tell the stories that bring font memories of how those were made.
In this post, we get a fun craft where we make some DIY snowflake Christmas ornaments for kids to make out of toilet paper rolls!
We will actually make it a Christmas Science activity. If you have heard of STEM and STEAM, you will see why.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. STEAM adds the “A” for Art.
Literature Christmas Ornaments
Before we decided on this year’s DIY ornaments for kids to make in our home and in our homeschool co-op, we read some Christmas and Winter books.
We came across the books you see below and the one that got our attention the most was Snowflake Bentley.

Note: you can use hot glue (use only with older kids), but I prefer tacky glue. It works very well without the risk.
STEM Christmas Ornaments
Let’s get started on this It takes about 2 empty toilet paper rolls for each snowflake.
Simply take a toilet paper roll and cut it into about 10 even strips. Then let the kids create their own designs.
Snowflakes are so amazing. There isn’t one that is the same. So it will be a lot of fun to come up with their own unique designs.
So, on a piece of paper, they can begin putting toilet paper roll strips together to make their snowflake. The strips can be bent, cut or shapes can be changed into ovals, oblong shapes or even v-shapes.
Take a look at some of the designs in the picture above. Then using the tacky glue, begin putting the pieces together. Let them dry completely.
Homeschool Christmas Ornaments
Use awesome Winter colors to paint the snowflake ornaments. We used dark blue, light blue, light purple and white.
Colors can be mixed, you can paint them in patterns, the snowflakes can be painted in one color and drizzle another color across it and just get creative to come up with a unique masterpiece.
Let it dry completely.
If you want them to look more professional, then use spray paint instead of acrylic paint, but I personally prefer to keep the kids involved in every step of the process.
Then it’s time to make this Christmas handmade ornament even more special! Glitter! We used silver, glittery white and other fun Winter colors for our glitter.
On separate paper plates, sprinkle glitter. Put some tacky glue on the snowflakes and then turn them upside-down so the glitter will stick.
Look at how pretty they look!
