But did you know that you can mix and match Montessori subjects to maximize learning?
That is RIGHT!
In this post, we will be talking about a way to learn about Montessori Geography, in this case, the continents of the world and at the same time, learn a Practical Life skill.
That Practical Life skill is lacing.
It is a fine motor skill that is SUPER important to learn to be more independent.
It also helps children with their Language Arts pre-writing dexterity, eye-hand coordination and so much more!
Montessori Preschool Curriculum at Home
You can use this activity particularly for children ages 3-6, but you can start earlier if your toddlers are ready.
You can also go higher than 6 if your child is still needing more fine motor skills practice.
Geography puzzle maps are great for fine motor skills practice, but this lacing activity takes it up a notch, for sure!
It is also nice to get creative and include different kinds of activities in your Montessori homeschool or Montessori classroom.
These continents match the Montessori puzzles colors, so they are a great transition without confusing children.
Montessori teachers think this is also great because it targets different learning styles.
Your lesson plan setup is easy:
Get the download and print these out in color and on cardstock.
Feel free to laminate for durability, but it is optional.
Cut around the continents, leaving about 1/4 of an inch of white border.
On that border, you will punch holes about 1 inch apart using a metal hole puncher.
Children will then lace the string, yarn, ribbon or anything that will fit through the holes to lace around the continents.

This is a fantastic activity in Your Montessori homeschool curriculum because not only do you target Practical Life activities with lacing.
They are also learning in all of these Montessori subjects:
- Language Arts and Practical Life: fine motor skills for pre-writing in Language Arts
- Geography, Culture, Sensorial: you are also helping children recognize the shapes of the continents
- Geography, Culture: they are learning the names of the different continents
- Geography, Culture, Language Arts: children are tarting to connect the name, shape and color of the continents for later Geography activities
- Sensorial: you help children to learn to match the colors of the continents with the colors of the ribbon (or whatever you use)
Isn’t that amazing?! Wow!
So, as you do Montessori at home or at school, you can boost your child’s interests in these subjects by combining them together.
This is, in all honesty, such a simple activity to set up that you can have it ready in less than 30 minutes.
This is, of course, if you get the laminator to warm up while you print and cut.
This way, you can laminate right away and then punch the holes.

Don’t forget! You can even diversify your lessons by teaching children to lace in different ways.
Take a look at the picture above.
You can see how the Europe continent map has a lacing that goes around the map.
You push up through the hole, again and again, hole after hole.
Now, look at the Australia map.
Can you see how this lacing is different?
You poke up the hole then push down in the next hole.
It will take a little practice to remember both.
But the good thing is that you can definitely give each a name and teach one at a time.
Introduce one and let the child master it before you introduce the next lacing type.
If you are interested in getting this great activity, you will find it extremely engaging and helpful.
You will be so glad you did!
