We have been learning about Simple Machines and we have been having SO MUH FUN! In this post, we made some awesome Simple Machine Science projects regarding screws. We learned about this simple machine, what it is, how it works, how to make one and even used some printable 3-part cards to bring it home! Come look!
Simple Machine Science Projects: Screws
Screws are fascinating little things that we take for granted. But they are awesome and so unique. We find screws in many different ways, from those little things that hold our picture frame on the wall to the snow blower the neighbor uses in Winter. There are more screws around us than we think!
Make a Screw
The magical thing about this simple machine is that it is actually an inclined plane, all twisted up! Let me show you how we made our own. We made one with a low pitch and one with a high pitch to notice the difference. Follow the instructions below.
- You need a piece of paper, a pair of scissors, a marker and a piece of tape (about 1/4 inch or so).
- First, fold the paper in a diagonal line and crease it.
- Next, cut along the crease. It will make two right triangles. Set aside one right triangle for the high pitch screw.
- Now, fold the second right triangle like the fourth picture to create a taller right triangle. Cut along the new crease.
- Along the cut lines, use the marker to color along the entirety of that diagonal line.
- Take on triangle and roll it around the marker, starting at the wider side of the triangle until a screw forms.
- Use the piece of tape to secure the inclined plane, now screw, in place.
- Do the same with the second triangle. Now you have a high pitch screw and a low pitch screw.
The bigger bulk of our wonderful lessons about simple machines came from our favorite Science curriculum from Nancy Larson Publishers! This curriculum is thorough, unique, easy to follow and easy to use. It makes my children love Science and they can’t get enough! I want to thank the creators of Nancy Larson Science 2 for bringing to us so much learning and so many hands-on ideas!
