#1 COORDINATE WITH ALL THE CURRICULA YOU ARE USING
Follow the learning plans, but figure out what is expected of your children and of you.
Build a workflow that works for your children and your family.
During the school year, you want to keep track of what your children are doing.
In the home school experience, you will find that some things will overlap, but you don’t want to double up, triple up or quadruple up for several reasons.
Two reasons are: burnout and the homeschooling day taking too much time.
I don’t know if you live in a state where you have to comply with the state or local school district to make sure the children are learning what they need to learn.
If you do, then do that as well.

#2 SET A SCHEDULE
You may be following a lesson plan, but it’s up to you and your child to set how you’ll work with it.
If you do have the flexibility, set up times for study and breaks at times that work with your child and family.
As you determine a schedule that works well (you might try several before you find the right one), you will want to also think about a few things.
Have a designated space to learn, a space for reading and a place that can get messy (like for arts and crafts) in your learning environment.
Setting a doable schedule is good for your mental health and your children’s.
Watch the training video above as I give you some examples from my own life.

#3 BUT REALLY… BE FLEXIBLE
Changes do happen.
Even if you have lesson plans and study schedules, home school is a new scenario for many.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Allow time to adjust.
In home education, just like in traditional classrooms, you will have things come up.
Whether you are having technical difficulties with your online curriculum, you have an unexpected visitor or have an appointment outside the home, things happen that mess up your day.
Or interrupt it.
Setting limits to your homeschool day can be a double-edged sword.
So determine from the beginning that you will be flexible to have shorter days, longer days, early days, later days, etc.

#4 LEAN INTO YOUR CHILD’S NATURAL INTERESTS
If your child is really engaged and self-driven on certain topics, schedule these topics during times where you can take a mental break or focus on other work.
As a homeschool mom, you will find it a lot easier to lesson plan around your children’s natural interests.
Also, don’t forget to schedule field trips on topics the children will enjoy.
“Homeschooling allows you the freedom to step off the highway of learning and take a more scenic route along a dirt road.” – Tamara L. Chilver
“Learning can only happen when a child is interested. If he’s not interested, it’s like throwing marshmallows at his head and calling it eating.” -Katrina Gutleben
#5 CONNECT WITH PARENTS
Get togethers (in person or online) are helpful.
You can chat with parents going through homeschool the first time, share stories, get tips.
Times may be hard but you don’t have to go through it alone.
Homeschool parents of young children especially need this adult interaction more than just your significant other for a couple of hours in the evening.
Plan a mom’s night out, a moms’ night in or just a, uninterrupted coffee outing or phone call with a close friend.
I have had moms come to my house to paint, to make Christmas ornaments, to watch a movie while putting on facial masks, etc.
It is fun, refreshing and definitely reinvigorating.
We don’t necessarily talk about our struggles in homeschooling, but if we need to, we certainly can!
“Never underestimate the power of connecting with other parents going through the same (or similar) journeys.” Tanya Wright
#6 FIND GOOD ONLINE RESOURCES
And last, but not least, don’t forget that a good just as a strong human connection is important for support in your homeschooling journey, so is a strong connection with great online resources.
