I am excited to be focusing on the topic of a Montessori school or Montessori homeschool schedule in this training.
If you are following a Montessori Curriculum 3-6, then you are in the right place!
Of course you can use these important scheduling points for any age, but I focus on mostly ages 3 to 6.
If you are wondering what a day in the life a Montessori class looks like, then you might fall into the trap of forcing yourself into that same schedule.
Be aware of that.
So, if you do look into others’ schedules, only use them as guides, not as a rule.
If you are looking to becoming a centered, organized Montessori Guide in yourself, nurture happy, normalized children and want to create smooth, successful Montessori days, then you are in the right place!
Let me know in comments what you know about this topic, what you have applied, what you have tried that worked, what you have tried that didn’t work and if you have any questions as we get into this training.
Here are three very important things to do to keep you confident and successful on the right Montessori schedule!
As you watch or listen to this training, know that you will be able to get more information than what is included in this blog post.
I really want to encourage you to take the time to watch or listen and take notes.
This will be helpful to you now and in the future.
#1 Know and pace yourself in your Montessori homeschool daily schedule
During your Montessori work time for the current school year, you need to know and pace yourself well first.
Grant yourself the grace and courtesy that you so fervently encourage your children to have!
Be realistic in setting goals for your schedule.
But at the same time, don’t be complacent.
Find the perfect balance where you are not overwhelmed and you are not cutting your children’s education short.
Planning a schedule should make you confident because you know what is coming.
But at the same time, it should keep you on your toes.
Your schedule should stretch you a bit, ok?
So, how does knowing and pacing yourself help you determine a good Montessori schedule?
Well, it is quite obvious if you think about it.
You will really give thought to that balance that I mentioned, where you are not overwhelmed or complacent.
“You are educating the whole child and, as such, you must always reach the child where they are at to bring them up to their full potential.” ~Tanya Wright
#2 Observe the children during the work cycle
Children have a daily Montessori work period and that can range from a few minutes to about 3 hours at a time.
Of course, this depends on so many things.
Some of those things are: the age, normalization level, education level and attention span of the children.
There are other reasons why this timeframe will vary, but these are the main ones.
One of the reasons that I always mention that will almost inevitably shorten the learning time is when you are just starting to do Montessori.
This is because you don’t want to overwhelm the children and yourself, obviously.
Between the normalization process (which is a MUST), getting to know the Montessori materials and figuring out what the best schedule for you is, you don’t want to overdo it.
How does observing the children help you come up with the best Montessori schedule possible?
As you begin, keep an eye on several things: when they are losing interest, when they are frustrated and when they are tired (or hungry).
By understanding where the children are in terms of energy and attention levels, you will know exactly how much time to set up in your schedule for each lesson or learning block.
“Never impose mundane or unintentional activities for the child because it will deflate their passion for lifelong learning and stagnate their normalization.” ~Tanya Wright
#3 Keep detailed notes during or after Montessori learning
When you are doing Montessori, I highly recommend that you keep detailed notes.
This is not only for what you plan to do, but actually what you did.
Keep track of what worked, what didn’t work, what tweaks or changes you can make, improvements, etc.
Why?
Because it is very important to see the whole picture.
If you keep detailed notes, you will see things better.
Have a Montessori planner to keep your lessons Montessori inspired or full-on Montessori if possible.
As you do your circle time, lesson presentations, Montessori work time, etc, you will be able to see things more clearly.
And this is going to make it so much easier for you to hone in to the best schedule that works for you.
“When your goal is to be successful in educating a child, then you need to be aware that you are to tackle it from a ‘whole picture’ perspective.” ~Tanya Wright
In Conclusion
As you ponder on these important points, I want to encourage you to really give this some thought.
Remember that you will start out with a short and simple schedule and slowly, add more time and activities until you get to the 3-hour learning period for children ages 3-6.
Be patient with yourself and the children you work with.
You will be successful if you are determined and intentional.
Keep moving forward, one step at a time!
