Supporting your child’s health and wellbeing is something every parent wants to be confident they are doing. But with so many things to think about, how do you easily approach this multifaceted task and ensure you are doing right by them?
It’s a tall ask; however, paying attention to the small things and knowing your child well can help you improve their health and wellbeing and support their development. This post looks at some easy ways to ensure they are happy and healthy.

Go Natural
This doesn’t just mean feeding your child organic produce, although that in itself can be beneficial. It means looking at all the products you use around the home and looking for healthier alternatives. Be it cleaning products, kids body wash, laundry detergent, and more. Look for natural or eco-friendly options to help you ensure you care for your home and their health by removing excessive chemical use from your home where possible. Use lemons, aloe vera, bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar, and more to make homemade cleaning solutions.

Vitamin D
Vitamin D is essential to your bodily function as it supports calcium absorption into the bones and can help reduce cancer cells and control infection and inflammation. Your body doesn’t create vitamin D on its own and converts sunlight on the skin into vitamin D, which it then uses to support its functions. 8-10 minutes is needed in the noon sun for plenty of vitamin D. It can also be found in additional supplements and some foods; however, ensuring your kids get out and about can help them get the vitamin D they need to support their health and wellbeing.
Communication
Let’s not just focus on the physical aspect of your child’s health; they also have mental and emotional needs. Teaching children how to communicate appropriately to meet their needs and process their feelings can go a long way to improving their mental wellbeing and supporting their overall health. Children who feel heard, loved, and supported are happier and healthier than those who are taught to bottle things up and keep them to themselves. This will impact their childhood and their development in the adult world.

Promote proper sleeping habits.
Some children can be notoriously bad at sleeping, especially at a younger age. However, instilling in them the importance of sleep at an age-appropriate level can give them some understanding of why they need sleep and what can happen if they don’t get enough.
This might not be effective when they are younger, but as they get older, especially for pre-teens and teens, knowing the why behind something can help them to understand its importance. Especially if they are active or have many after-school commitments. The amount of sleep a child needs will vary depending on their age and their activity levels. However, the general rule looks something like this;
- Toddlers – 11-14 hours
- Pre-school – 10-13 hours
- School age – 9-12
- Teens – 8-10 hours
Conclusion
There is more to helping your child be happy and healthy as they grow than feeding them a balanced diet, although that is an essential aspect too. It is about paying attention to all areas of development and how you live your life to ensure they are getting the best possible start.
