They are so much fun to sit and read with younger children.
My children are getting a little bit older now, they are six and eight; so I was looking for ways to keep reading the famous lovely book with them.
In order to do so, I’ve been making several Eric Carle Very Hungry Caterpillar printables to make the story relatable for their age.

Very Hungry Caterpillar Homeschool Printables Activities
This is an awesome printable Hungry caterpillar project!
First, you download the printable hungry caterpillar board game file (at the end of this post).
There are also a few additional materials you need for these caterpillar printables.

- Tape or glue stick
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar giant confetti
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar giant stickers
- Dice
- Optional: a small box for the color cards
- Optional: The Very Hungry Caterpillar book
- Optional: Heat-free laminator with laminating roll
Very Hungry Caterpillar Homeschool Printables
Alright, now that you have all if the materials you need on hand, let’s set up the board game!
Download and print The Very Hungry Caterpillar activities free printables in color on cardstock.
Once you have The Very Hungry Caterpillar printables, set the cards aside for now and focus on the board.
Tape or glue the two board pieces to make one big board piece. It will look like the picture below.
Beside needing these Eric Carle Hungry Caterpillar printables, you will also need the giant confetti and the giant stickers.
Sort out all of the red, orange, yellow, green and blue shiny confetti and randomly glue the colors on each board space (see picture below).
The actual Hungry Caterpillar giant confetti are goin to be your markers for each player.
There are 4 different kinds, so there can be up to 4 player in this game. The giant stickers are for decorating the board.
You can cut around the stickers to fit them around the board or you can use the extras to give to each player every time they reach a certain space on the board.
It’s completely up to you!
Hungry Caterpillar Homeschool Printables
Now that the board is done and drying, get the other part of The Hungry Caterpillar printables.
Cut out the color cards (each card will have a color square and a white square attached.
See picture below.
Fold them in half to make them folded cards.
Now, cut out the message cards and randomly tape or glue one inside each color card.
If you have a small container for the cards, they will hold better once you’re playing the game, so I highly recommend it.
The Hungry Caterpillar Activities
Yay! You got this very hungry caterpillar printable board game and set it all up.
Everything is dry and ready to go! Let’s talk about the game!
It would be fun to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar book before the game, but that is optional, of course.
Set up the game as you see in the picture below. The rules are easy to follow.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Board Game Rules:
- This game is for 2-4 players or 2-4 teams (if you have more than 4 people that want to play. Each player (team) picks a token of the caterpillar to mark their spot on the board.
- All players (teams) roll the die and the highest roller begins. You may also choose to start from oldest to youngest or from youngest to oldest.
- The first player rolls the die again. He moves the number of spaces shown on the die.
- The player will look at the color of the shiny confetti on that spot then picks a card in the same color.
- The player will read the card out loud and do what the card says.
- Now, it’s the next player’s turn! Repeat steps 3-6 with each player (team) until someone (or everyone reaches the end of the board).
Note: The arrows on the board represent a shortcut.
Players (teams) may choose to use the shortcut if they land on one BEFORE a color card is picked.
A player cannot read a color card and if they don’t like the message then choose to use the shortcut.
The shortcut must be chosen or denied before a color card is read.

Get a binder with a pocket to store it safely when it’s not in use.
