As a parent, the first lesson you need to learn is that every child is different. Therefore, becoming the best parent you can be to your child begins with the realization that you can’t treat everyone the same way. Indeed, parenting best practices require adjusting to include and respect the differences between your children.
For instance, a child with ADHD will not respond the same to a child without. As a parent, understanding that fair parenting means individual adjustments is the most important lesson. There is no pre-cut template to become a parent. In other words, being a parent to your kids will require you to understand, appreciate, and assess their needs.
Diversify the learning material and format
Whether you are homeschooling or not, you’ve probably noticed that your children have different learning patterns. Perhaps, the elder clicks with the learning materials and learns rapidly, while the younger one seems to struggle.
It can be frustrating to watch, especially when your other child has no difficulties. You may wonder what you have done wrong or where those learning issues are a symptom of something worse. In reality, learning issues are often triggered by the lack of material diversity.
So, it may be worth considering mixing educative materials and formats. You could use primary school worksheets that have been produced by a specialist tutoring and schooling center to support your child’s education, for instance. This could help diversify the learning environment and find their preferred learning style.
Appreciate that picky eaters may just have different needs
Every child goes through a phase of being a picky eater. It is, unfortunately, a normal process as toddlers and young children get to experience new foods. Fear of the unknown can make it tricky to feed your child during these years. They may not want to try new dishes and constantly demand the same meal. Additionally, they may also reject some types of foods.
But what if it carries on when your kids get older? When one child is a fussy eater, it can feel to a parent like the child is intentionally ruining dinner time for everyone. So why is your child picky?
Some parents have discovered that kids who are picky about a specific food are allergic to it. So, it can be worth checking if your kid always rejects the same ingredient, such as onions, garlic, or even potatoes.
Alternatively, a child with autism can find comfort in known textures and tastes and react violently to the introduction of new food. The bottom line, perhaps there’s more to it than meets the eye. So, the traditional “finish your plate if you want dessert” that we might have heard from our parents and grandparents will not work.
Quality time together
Spending time with your child strengthens your bond. However, quality time doesn’t necessarily equal duration. As a parent, you often have to juggle work, household, and childcare responsibilities. So, of course, you can find it hard to make plenty of time for your child when your plate is full.
It could be tempting to combine some of your tasks, such as taking your child with you when you go grocery shopping, so you can talk and engage while fulfilling a crucial household chore! Some children love helping and going shopping with their parents, and they enjoy sharing an activity together and taking responsibility. Others are not keen on the idea and find it unpleasant. Quality time is not about duration but about sharing a positive experience together. Even if you have only 10 or 15 minutes a day to dedicate to an enjoyable common activity, this will be more effective than forcing them to do something they dislike.
