This is our Montessori-Inspired Botany post for the 12 Months of Montessori Learning Series!
We are so excited to be bringing you amazing posts every month and what is cool is that every month focuses on a different subject.
In January, we shared Practical Life posts.
In February, we shared Geography posts.
In March, we shared Language Arts posts and now, in April, we are bringing you our Botany posts in honor of Spring and Earth Day.
In this post, we will be showing you how we learned about the parts of a plant and the parts of a tree with beautiful puzzles and we are offering free printables for you to use at home.
We hope you enjoy these ideas and that your children will learn about plants and trees.
Don’t forget to read the entire post to get your free printables and check out other botany posts!

Parts of a Flower: Puzzle
This Montessori puzzle is a beautiful way of learning the parts of a flower.
This flower puzzle, in particular, was a little bit challenging at first, but once Sister focused on the shape of each of the pieces, she was able to study the puzzle and determine where each piece belonged.
You can also find information on parts of a flower HERE and our post on flower arrangement HERE.

Parts of a Tree: Puzzle
The Montessori tree puzzle is so beautiful.
Personally, it brings me such a sense of peace when I see it.
It looks like it does the same to Sister because she was so quiet and focused while working on this puzzle.
At the end, she said, “It is so beautiful, Mom!”
If you wanted to extend this work, you can look into getting this tree activity for your child.
It is very highly recommended.
Parts of a Leaf: Puzzle
When Sister completed this leaf puzzle, she smiled a big smile and had such a sense of satisfaction.
Puzzles are such wonderful work for brain development, but these Montessori puzzles serve more purposes than one: they also help teach the parts of these botany works.
To extend this work, you can get more ideas and inspiration in my “Parts of a Stem, a Leaf, a Seed” post.
Parts of a Plant: Printable Graphic & Labels
And now, for the free printable activities!
I printed these on white cardstock and used a thermal laminator to make them sturdier and more durable.
I left the main labeling sheet as is and then I cut the labels and the puzzle pieces.
As I read the labels, Sister placed them in the correct place on the main labeling sheet.

I also made a plant puzzle. The main labeling sheet will be the control of error.
To start out, present the puzzle and the labeling sheet to the child and show him/her how to put the puzzle together on top of the control of error (labeling sheet).
Once the child has mastered this level, you can then invite the child to put the puzzle together next to the labeling sheet, not on top (see image below).
Level three would be putting together the puzzle on their own and looking that the control of error after the puzzle has been completed by memory.

Parts of a Tree: Printable Graphic, Labels & Puzzles
I also made this set of free tree printables.
This set contains: a labeling image (and it doubles as the puzzles’ control of error), labels for tree, puzzle (beginner level) and puzzle (advanced level).
I printed these on white cardstock and used a thermal laminator to make them sturdier and more durable.
I left the main labeling sheet as is and then I cut the labels and the puzzle pieces.
Sister is just learning to read, so I read the labels to her and she places them in the correct spot on the labeling image (see first picture below).
Next, I introduce the puzzles.
The beginner level is the tree puzzle with four long pieces (see second image below).
Use the labeling image as the control of error.
The advanced level is the same puzzle image, but it has 10 pieces.
For this one, also, use the labeling image as the control of error.
To start out, present the puzzle and the labeling sheet to the child and show him/her how to put the puzzle together on top of the control of error (labeling sheet).
Once the child has mastered this level, you can then invite the child to put the puzzle together next to the labeling sheet, not on top.
Level 3 would be putting together the puzzle on their own and looking that the control of error after the puzzle has been completed by memory.
