When the weather starts to get warmer, we love heading outside to find fun ways to play with educational topics. In this post, we will share with you some awesome sidewalk chalk ideas for early writing! My daughter enjoyed not only reviewing her alphabet letter names and sounds, but she also loved practicing writing the letters.

Take a look at these really fun items to use for some awesome sidewalk chalk projects, but also for learning the alphabet!

First off, I used the blue chalk to create a really long “sentence line,” with a solid line for the bottom, a solid line for the top and a dashed line in the middle. My 5-year old got super excited because she recognized the popular writing line. We spoke of how the letters are placed on the line.
The middle ones like the “n,” the “m” and the “x” stay between the bottom line the dashed line. The low letters, like “j,” “g” and “p” go below the bottom solid line. The tall letters, like “l,” “t” and “h” go above the dashed line to touch the solid like at the top.
I wrote the alphabet in pink as we spoke about these writing rules. She helped me with each letter. She would tell me what letter came next and if it was a low, middle or tall letter.
Early Writing and Fine Motor Skills
The next activity that we did was to have her pick a different chalk color to write each letter of the alphabet, next to the one I wrote. She really enjoyed this particular activity! She felt so grown up, writing letters so well! And she enjoyed us getting creative with these fun sidewalk chalk ideas instead of having her do the exact same activity on paper indoors.
