In this post, we made a hands-on activity inspiring Winter Diorama Ideas. Some people call it a sensory bin.
We used this bin with different animals as a sensory bin or a Winter diorama about animals that hibernate in Winter, but now, it is about animals that adapt in Winter.
Come see!
Animals that Adapt in Winter
There are many animals that don’t hibernate and that don’t migrate in Winter. Instead, they stay home and adapt to their environment exactly where they are.
You can read up some more on that in our post: Animals in Winter: What is Adaptation?
We also read books on adaptation and about animals that adoption Winter as well a printing these awesome 17 Printable Pictures of Animals that Adapt in Winter.
So now, we wanted to bring the lesson home with a fun (and a bit messy) hands-on diorama.
Preschool Sensory Bins
I was trying to come up with a way to use snow for this sensory bin, except that we don’t have snow here right now.
So I go creative.
I could’ve used fake insta-snow, but I decided to go with white flour. That’s right! I got a few neighbors to donate their expired or old white flour for us to use it for the sensory bin.
What you need is a shallow tray, a couple of miniature animal and tree replicas, beads of varied colors, flour or instant snow and a few props (empty bathroom rolls).

Some Animals Adapt in Winter
After we read some books and we went through our adaptation lesson (linked below), we set up this awesome sensory bin.
We used an empty paper towel roll for a tree trunk and an empty cut-up piece of toilet paper roll for a cave and the other piece as a boulder.
The blue beads were the water, the brown is the soil around the water and the green beads can be a random patch of uncovered ground that isn’t covered in snow.
Take a look. My 4-year old practiced her fine motor skills to handle the pieces and animals very carefully. She liked changing positions for the animals and the trees.
It was fun talking about animal names, about how all of these animals adapt in Winter and about how we are doing a good job keeping pos of the flour inside the tray.

I used to love listening to my Mom read about all the animals and what they do in winter (I was homeschooled). This is such a cute idea!
