We decided to expand this unit this Winter, too!
Check out how many activities and fun things we have done HERE!
There is so much we have learned already, but we love to do expand our knowledge because we are just fascinated and very interested!
In this post, we share pictures of animals that adapt in winter.
We will show you how we used them, but really, there are so many things you can do with them.
Get them for free in this post, print them out and put them to good use!
I think you kids will enjoy this unit as much as my kids have.
Hibernation, Adaptation, Migration
As we have been learning, there are animals that hibernate in Winter.
Also, there are some animals that migrate in Winter.
In this post, we focus on animals that adapt in Winter.
We started out by printing this beautiful set of 17 pictures of animals that adapt in Winter.
I printed them in color, used a guillotine to cut them and then laminated them for durability.
If you want to use these cards as 3-part cards, you can print 2 set of this printable.

Next, we read some books on adaptation. We reviewed what it is and what it means for animals to adapt.
Be sure to research about structural adaptation, if they adapt for a period of time or longterm, how they find food when everything is full of snow and ice, how they stay warm and if body temperature changes play a role in that and, most importantly, what the process of adaptation looks like.
There are many awesome books out there, but here are some of our favorites:

&
We also read books on the particular animals that adapt in Winter.
We learned about their fur (if they get thicker coats), their habits as the temperature drops, what they do to conserve energy and lifespans (if natural selection plays a role).
Here are some of the ones we read:
The Usborne Internet-Linked First Encyclopedia of Animals (FirstSecrets of Winter Secrets (A Shine-A-Light Book )Usborne World of Animals

Animals that Adapt in Winter
How do animals adapt to seasonal changes during the Winter months?
Well, now that we have the activity ready and we have read some books on the topic, we set up the cards in 2 rows.
As we set them up, we talked again about what animals do in Winter.
My daughter’s favorites were the Arctic and Antarctic animals.
Then, we go our awesome mini animal replicas and found the ones that we had.
She matched them up to the cards and was noticing each one up-close.
It was fun looking through our mason jars (where we keep the mini animal replicas for the different habitats) to find them and match them up.
Not only that, but we also went into a conversation about the different animal kingdoms and separated the cards by groups: mammals, reptiles, insects, etc.
That only took a few minutes, but it was good to begin categorizing animals and recognize the different animal groups.
We also had a great opportunity to talk about things like animal breeds.
See, the mini dog replica we have isn’t the same breed as the dog on the card, but they are both still dogs.
So we discussed about this when it comes to other animals and how some breeds do the same thing in Winter (like cats, dogs, deer, etc) and other breeds do different things (polar bears adapt while Black bears hibernate).

Alright, so, these cards are perfect for using like we did and also as 3-part cards.
We also use them to have kids practice handwriting by copying the animal names onto paper.
My son is learning cursive, so it is fun to let him figure out how to write these animal names in cursive on his own.
This is a great adaptation picture set and you will be blown away at how much your kids will learn!
