We have been leaning what Hibernation, Adaptation and Migration are, which animals do each and how their lives function during Winter.

Hibernation, Adaptation and Migration

What animals hibernates in the Winter? What animals migrate during the Winter? How do animals adapt to Winter?

Use this craft and the questions above to spark the conversation! Let’s get started!

Instructions:

1. Get the printable in this blog post and print it in color.
2. This is an overlapping spinning wheel. I printed one copy of the set on white card stock and laminated them using a thermal laminator.
3. I printed a second one on regular paper, cut them and glued them on paper plates.
4. Overlap the circles, use a brass fastener to keep them together, but keep it loose enough so that the top circle turns easily. That’s it! They are ready to be used! Children can leave them as they are or color the animal pictures to make them more colorful and personalized.
5. I use a zipper baggie (gallon size) to keep them together.
6. Enjoy and use them a lot!

You can pick and choose which one is easiest for you. I made one of each (card stock and paper plate) so you can see and compare. Both are sturdy and durable.

The benefit of using the card stock one is that you can laminate it, so it is even more durable.

3 Animals that Hibernate, Adapt and Migrate

This craft focuses on a small blurb on what hibernation, adaptation and migration are and we also focus on one animals that does each.

It is important for something to stick with kids until we do another Winter study next Winter, so I made sure they could at least review what these are and one animal that does each. 🙂

How is this a STEAM activity? Well, the Science part is where we learn about animals in Winter and what hibernation, migration and adaptation are at a glance.

The Technology and Engineering parts are that we created a contraption (a complex machine or spinning wheel) for our learning.

Art includes the design and the coloring part of this craft.

The Math part is where we measure the circles, match up edges, use a ruler to find the center for the brass fastener to go into and use exact angles to rotate the cover circle to display the entire legend and picture of animal underneath.
