Instructions to Make the Diorama
Why do animals migrate? Make sure you discuss this thoroughly so children understand the concept and why a map of the world is used in this hands-on activity.
I got a map of the world and split it into 3 parts so we can print it out on bigger pieces of paper.
I also tried to find only 5 animals that migrate, but ended up finding almost a dozen of them, so I included them all!
Take all 3 map parts and fold the white borders to set them exactly next to each other before taping.
Make sure they are aligned perfectly to create a large world map.
Set it aside and cut out the square animal pictures. BEFORE you do this, read this instruction.

Cut out the animal pictures with a blank lip underneath each of the animal names at the bottom of the pictures.
This is very important to do because you need to be able to fold that lip backward so the animal pictures can stand upright on the world map.
Look at the picture below. Don’t they look great?!
The next step is for you to go online. Needless to say, but I’ll say it anyway, please monitor all online web surfing that involves children.
Make a google search for the term animal migration map. You will find several terms. But what we are looking for are the images.
The link HERE is the map that we used for our activity. It is very easy to follow and understand.

It was fun letting my son pick the whale’s route and my daughter pick the seal’s route. Instead of using a few, we used them all!
Animals who Migrate Routes
It is so interesting to investigate what animals do in Winter and those who migrate, to see what routes they take. This is the fun part.
Take out the modeling clay in a few colors and start rolling out thin strips in each color.
As the kids look at the online animal migration map and pick a route for each of the animals that migrate in Winter, use the modeling clay strips to trace those routes.
