We have shown you a few other Astronomy lessons and activities that we have done in the past. You can see them HERE. But today, we are showing you a higher level of activities in this beautiful subject of Astronomy. We also have a beautiful free Astronomy home study setย to use in this lesson. Come and take a look at such a great list of great ideas on the subject.
We started out reading some books about the Solar System. One of the planet book sets we enjoy is in Spanish, but you know what? It is from Scholastic, so it comes in both English and Spanish. They are fantastic!
We also love our mini encyclopedia about space. It’s got everything you need and the best part is that it is small enough to not take up much room and the illustrations and photography are fabulous.
Next, we took out our Astronomy informational cards from our Classical education set. They cover so much and the images are very realistic. We also used our Solar System mini replicas to put the sun and planets in the right order. I used simple wooden bases to keep them in place.

This is the set of free astronomy home study printable set ofย informational cards that I made for my children. You can use the key card with the pictures and the names of the planets, moons, asteroids and such to learn what they look like. The rest are cards with bulleted facts for each celestial body included in this set.
I split the informational cards into 2 sets: the solar system and the moons, asteroids, etc. Before the lesson, I printed them out in color and laminated them using thermal pouches because they last longest. Then I cut them out and used the hole punch and metal rings to keep the two sets together.
The first activity was to go through each card in the entire set to find that celestial body on the key card and say its name. This took about 10 minutes because we discussed their appearance and visible details on their surfaces.
Then, we took the solar system cards and the Solar System mini replicasย and read the facts about each planet as well as the sun and moon. While my oldest (6 years old) read the facts on the cards, my youngest (4 years old) would find that celestial body in the mini replicas and held it (examined it).
The activity we did together was using the Solar System mini replicas and the moons cards (from our free printables). Basically, we read the moons cards and we would place them on the rug next to their corresponding planets in our solar system.
It was so much fun learning that Saturn has so many moons and what its rings are composed of. We enjoyed looking at the shapes and colors of the moons. They have asked to “play” this several times now. I am happy to see come across an activity they enjoy so much while they are learning.

Lastly, we used two sticker books that we love and picked out two pages to fill out with fantastic stickers! This is book 1 and this is book 2. Sister picked the Solar System page. She enjoyed placing the planets and the stars as well as the asteroids on the double page. She enjoys ordering items. Brother picked the page with rockets and satellites. He has such an engineering mind! He loves machines and robots.
I hope you enjoyed our activities! The printable is very much a Montessori-inspired activity that would be educational and it would look beautiful in an environment on the science shelf. Come on and get your awesome printable set below for $1.00!
