Here is a review for a wonderful historical fiction audio book for children. It is made by Heirloom Audio Productions based on the wonderful book by G.A. Henty. The audio book is titled The Dragon and the Raven.
When we received it, we got a set of two CDs in a beautifully decorated case and a letter with an access code for our list of awesome freebies. I’ll tell you more about the freebies in a little bit. Stay tuned! Read on and take a look at how we liked it.
Even though my children are young (four and six), this isn’t our first audio book rodeo. We loved reviewing Heirloom Audio Productions’ Under Drake’s Flag a couple of years ago. And just like back then, as soon as the audio began playing in the car, my children were quiet, attentive and mesmerized by the story. When this awesome audio book for children was over, they asked for me to play it again.
Like I mentioned, The Dragon and the Raven is a historical fiction audio book in two CDs. It is filled with action and adventure. The sound effects and music are of the best quality. It kept the most active and chatty children quiet throughout. They were engaged in the story, they were asking questions and even referring to the characters as if they knew them well.
One of the things I love about G.A. Henty books is that they are full of scripture references, poems and quotes that help instill character, morals and following Christ in the middle of the most difficult of circumstances. As we were listening to the audio, I would keep track of the chapters with the best scriptures and quotes as well as teachable lessons to possibly incorporate into a copywork unit about this audio book for children.
To bring it all home, we also received a bonus package which included, among other things, the download for the fantastic original score for this audio book, documentaries about how the audio was made and historical background for this particular story and time period, but my favorite freebie was the printable study guide.
You can see some of it below. Wow. It is beautiful, colorful and full of information, questions, pictures and facts about this time period. I printed some of the pages to get us started, but I am planning on printing the entire thing to study once a year, along with the other G.A. Henty books made into audio adventures by Heirloom Audio Productions.
In my honest opinion, I love Heirloom Audio Productions audio books. G.A. Henty is a well-respected author and they did his books justice and more with this excellent audio. It brings history back to life! We felt like we were in the middle of the battles and we got to see how they handled the toughest of decisions in a godly manner. I highly recommend The Dragon and the Raven.

Note to parents: The Dragon and the Raven were the names of ships and there is no fictional character in the story that represents a dragon nor is a dragon a character in the story.
