We love studying Geography in our homeschool, especially using the Montessori curriculum!
As we study the 7 continents of the world, I usually like to coordinate Antarctica studies around Winter.
Why? Well, it’s cold and icy there. It goes well with the Winter season and with our animals in Winter unit.
In this post, we will talk about Montessori continent folders, particularly, I will share with you the one we do during Winter: Antarctica!
Come look at this fun lesson on Antarctica for kids and get your free printable, too.
Don’t forget to visit our resources hub for printable flags activities and lessons!
It is full of wonderful hands-on ideas for you to use at home.
Montessori at Home Continent Folders
The continent folders by Montessori have been one of the most wonderful findings for us.
As we learn about continents and countries, as well as flags of the world, we collect printable goodies that we include in our folders.
First, you get a folder with pockets. Then, you get our free printable for Antarctica.
It contains a cover page to glue on the front of the folder and 2 collage pages.
They are full of wonderful images, maps and photos of Antarctica that you only glue along the top of the inside of the folder.
That way, you can lift them up and use the pockets to put more fun flat items that belong to that continent.
You can also use index cards to write down Antarctica facts for kids to remember or research further.
Also, include a full-color Antarctica map continent!
Find the download for this freebie (Antarctica only) at the end of this blog post.
But if you are interested in getting these printable for all 7 continents to begin your own Montessori continent folders, GO HERE!
And if you also wanted to include the country flags of the world 3-part cards with over 500 flags, GO HERE! Antarctica is included!
Montessori at Home Continent Boxes
As we study the world, we have been collecting gadgets, mementos, postcards and more over the years.
We have gotten enough to actually start continent boxes, which includes 7 continents of the world printable stuff, but also little hands-on miniatures and such.
We have gotten some of these great little hands-on and online ideas from our Little Passports World Edition monthly delivery!
We love it!
So, in the boxes, you can include all of your Montessori continents printables, papers, puzzles and replicas.
It is a great way to keep everything organized and contained. We have one for each of the seven continents of the world.
To see how we put them together, GO HERE.

Antarctica is one of the toughest continents to collect stuff on, so we use our Antarctica puzzle, the penguin miniature replicas, our Little Passports goodies and a handful of other books and materials (like Montessori puzzle maps and flags of the world map, see below) to help make this continent study more complete and thorough.
And although I have never been to Antarctica, I have actually visited the southernmost city in South America (at the very tip of Argentina)!
I love showing my kids pictures of that and also of me walking on a glacier.
From there, all you do is get on an ice breaker (a special kind of ship to withstand large blocks of ice and icebergs) to go to Antarctica.
I printed some of those pictures and included them in our Antarctica continent folder.
Antarctica for Kids
There are plenty of fun and interesting Antarctica facts that kids will find fascinating.
Make sure you include those in your folder or box of continents for kids.
It is quite easy to put a unit together and remember, the more visuals and hands-on objects and activities you have, the more kids will learn.
This free printable includes a map of the Antarctica continent as well as the picture of the flag (which is a blue rectangle and the map of Antarctica in white at the center) and other interesting things like animals, settlements and more.
You can get this collage and cover page below. Simply enter your name and email, then check your inbox.
The PDF file will be there waiting for you.
But if you want to make this more than individual Geography lesson plans, but rather form an entire unit, then I highly recommend looking into the full set HERE.
