One of my children’s favorite sensorial materials in our Montessori Sensorial Album are the Geometric Solids.
They are perfect for small hands, they are versatile and there is so much the they learn with them!
In this post, I will show you five of the lessons they practice (be on the lookout for more lessons coming soon!) and why we love Sensorial materials.
Sensorial Montessori at home Book List
Children enjoy and learn much from sensory stimulation. It has been proven and corroborated more and more in the recent decade or so, but Maria Montessori got it right a century ago by implementing sensorial materials in her curriculum. Isn’t that amazing?
Learning how to use Montessori materials and apply Montessori learning can be a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be. You just need to know where to start. Below, I share two great resources to get you started, specifically with Montessori Sensorial materials. I also share with you two lists I made of curriculum items to include in Montessori leaning.

Montessori Sensorial Album: Geometric Solids
Alright, let’s get started on the lessons. It has always been quite interesting to observe my children and see what their take is on the material and how it has a slightly (or quite marked) twist every time the material gets used.
Geometric Solids Lesson 1: Presentation
- Invite the child to join in and set up a mat and a tray with the Geometric Solids.
- Introduce the material using The Montessori Three-Period Lesson (I have a printable list for you there). All you need are the Geometric Solids for this.
- Repeat until all the shape names have been mastered.
Geometric Solids Lesson 2: Mystery Bag
- Invite the child to join in. You need the Geometric Solids on a tray or in a basket and a cloth to cover the entire top.
- Explain to the child that one hand will go in and find a Geometric Solid and feel it until he can name it.
- Begin with the sphere and the cube, for example. Practice and add more for the rest of the activity.
- He then will take the shape out to confirm that it is, indeed, the shape named.
- If correct, leave the shape out of the basket. If incorrect, return it to the basket, after helping the child name it.
- Continue until all of the Geometric solids are out of the basket/tray.
- Extension: Put all of the Geometric Solids in the basket and cover it. Ask the child to find one of the shapes. Name it by name and have the child feel the shapes for the correct Geometric Solid. Continue until all of them have been found correctly.
Geometric Solids Lesson 3: 3-Part Cards
- Print out the 3-Part Cards included in this blog post in color. Make 2 copies and cute them in the correct way for 3-Part Cards (the printable has the instructions).
- Invite the child to join in at a table or by a mat. Set up the mat, if chosen.
- Use the 3-Part cards only to match all of them up, along with the nomenclature, of course.
- The child will name the shapes as the cards are matched up.
- This is a great way to continue mastering the material and to work on this material when another child is using the Geometric Solids.
Geometric Solids Lesson 4: Match-ups
- Invite the child to join in. Set up a mat, Geometric Solids on a tray next to the mat and the 3-Part Cards.
- First, take the 3-part cards and set them up like the image below, with spaces (about a child’s hand width) between each card.
- Once all of the cards are set (only the cards with the nomenclature attached), the child will now take one Geometric Solid in his hands and find the matching card.
- The child will then place the Geometric Solid to the right of the correct card.
- Continue doing that until all of the 3-Part Cards and the Geometric Solids have been matched up.
- Extension (Lesson 5): Repeat this lesson, but using the 3-Part cards without the nomenclature attached, as to confirm that the child knows all of the Geometric Solids.

What do you think? Isn’t this a great way to learn Geometric Solids names? I am sure your children will enjoy this activity as much as mine!
