Expanding your homeschool group is a big decision when you already have an established community. However, it can be an opportunity to enjoy new experiences and learn new techniques. This can be reason enough to welcome expansion with open arms.
There can be a few logistics involved with expansion. If the time has come to welcome new families into your homeschooling community, consider these factors:

Compliance, Laws, and Regulations
Everything from homeschooling laws and reporting requirements to your own house insurance can be essential to consider when your homeschooling group expands. If more children are learning in your home environment, the extra learning materials may see you needing additional coverage or even a special business endorsement. Itโs also a good idea to brush up on homeschooling laws in your state. Some states require you to qualify as a private school or be certified as a private tutor. State laws can differ dramatically.ย
Your Goals
Opening up your homeschool group to new homeschoolers can be straightforward if you have defined your goals. Think about why youโre expanding and what you hope to achieve. Some people welcome more homeschooling families into their group when they want to share educational resources and tips for homeschooling. Others want to support homeschooling parents or provide valuable social interactions for their children. Your goals may make it easier to expand with confidence.ย

Communication Channels
Small homeschooling groups easily communicate through multiple channels without forgetting important information. However, that can change when your group expands. It can be helpful to establish set communication channels so everyone can access the information they need, like group activities, resources, and events.ย
Some homeschooling groups have private social media groups, while others create email newsletters. You may even start small with a messaging group to which all adult group members have been added.
Leadership Structure
The more homeschooling families join a homeschool group, the more important it can be for the group to have a leadership structure. Someone needs to be at the groupโs helm to organize events, answer parent questions, and find resources for the group to enjoy.
There also needs to be a problem-solver, a delegator, and someone to be the voice of reason if any conflicts arise. This person can also select other roles and responsibilities within the group. You might create positions for people to be in charge of booking activities or finding venues for homeschooling events.ย

Events and Activities
The type of events and activities you plan for a homeschooling group can change as that group grows. You may have easily been able to join activities and visit public venues. However, a larger group might mean you need to plan ahead. Fortunately, this might be made much easier if you have a leadership structure for your group. The logistics of events and activities can become specific peopleโs jobs.
While there can be much to think about before expanding your homeschooling group, it doesnโt have to be challenging. Focus on these areas above, and you may feel confident welcoming new families with open arms.
