Welcome to our Frog Life Cycle for Kids post! It is such a great post, full of activities that you and your children will learn a lot from (in a fun way) with four fantastic printables that you can get right here and use in your own homeschools! Come and take a look at what we did.
First, we began, like always, reading some books about the lifecycle of the frog. We especially enjoyed these: From Tadpole to Frog because it has amazing real photos of the process and Tale of a Tadpole because it was so much fun reading all the details.
We also loved Oscar and the Frog: A Book About Growing (Start with Science) because it is a super cute story about a curious cat and the frog answers all of his questions. and Frogs because it talks about the noises frogs make, what they look like and other fun stuff like that.
We also looked at the frog 3D skeleton model and the frog life stage replicas. We just love hands-on learning!
Next, to continue the hands-on part of the Frog Life Cycle for Kids lesson, I brought out the 3-part cards that I had printed in color and cut with a guillotine. I will laminate them for a prolonged lifetime; I just didn’t have time that day to do it.
These are the best starter activity when first introducing children to the frog’s life cycle. It is a set of 4 cards (which you print out twice) and one keeps the nomenclature part attached while the second card is separate from the nomenclature card. The first cards are placed on the mat and then the second set of pictures and nomenclature cards are matched up with them.
Learning level: Basic. Be introduced to the frog life cycle and to match pictures and terms.
Our second activity was a bit more complicated as it introduces more steps in the frog life cycle. This is a card that is printed in color on white cardstock with labels on it and the same card without labels, but rather the labels are aside. You can laminate this one as well as you can use it over and over.
The first step is to match the labels to the correct pictures, using the labeled card as a control of error. The second step was to match the labels to the pictures describing the frog life cycle without looking at the control of error.
Learning Level: Beginner. Children are introduced to more steps in the frog life cycle and they can recall the steps without a control of error after several practices.
The third activity in our Frog Life Cycle for Kids lesson is a consumable one. You use paper and pencil to match the steps of the frog life cycle OR you can laminate this sheet and use dry erase markers or dry erase crayons for durability and to use over and over. It can double up as a short and fun “quiz” to see how much the children have learned.
Learning Level: Medium. Children not only have to know the different stages of the frog life cycle, but they also have to recall which pictures match with each.
The fourth and last activity is this awesome spinning wheel with the frog life cycle. I printed ours in color on white cardstock. As an option, you can laminate this as well. You need a brass fastener to hold both pieces together and so it spins when moved.
Learning Level: High. Children have to recall all of the frog life cycle stages without having text or terms in front of them, but rather use the images as visual cues. Also, the images are in order from egg to adult, so the child won’t get confused with stages being out of order.
