As my children started to get those teeny tiny tooth buds in their gums, I started using a rubber brush to keep their teeth clean. But as they got older, I would let them try brushing their teeth with supervision. Now that they are 5 and 7 years old, I make sure they know exactly how to brush their teeth where their mouths will be germ-free as much as possible.
In this post, we will be sharing the specific steps to brushing teeth for children using a brushing teeth chart and 3-part cards.
Children Brushing Teeth Properly
We read several books about brushing teeth with the kids and we loved this one the best. It was fun imitating different animals like a chimp and a shark brushing their teeth and flossing daily. What we loved the best was that this was such a fun pop-up book! And it went perfectly with our lesson on dental hygiene and the steps to brushing teeth properly.
Steps to Brushing Teeth
So, speaking of the proper brushing of teeth, I made a boy chart and a girl chart with the 10 steps of brushing teeth. The child begins with yellow-looking teeth and as the child brushes different parts of the mouth, the teeth look whiter and whiter.
This visual chart is laminated by the bathroom sink. It helps my children to remember the steps because you aren’t brushing your child’s teeth forever. They need independence in this task. The goal is to brush all of their teeth, front and back and not only their front teeth.
My daughter is 5 and she is learning to read, so the images remind her of the steps. My sone is seven, so he can read the description for ever step under each image. Since they usually brush their teeth at the same time, they help each other keep track of the steps and check each other.
Books about Brushing Teeth
The books below will paint a great picture of brushing teeth properly, so I recommend reading a few to your kids. Mine really enjoyed the stories and the different characters, but all the stories just repeated and reiterated the same themes: maintaining good dental hygiene, taking care of our teeth and avoiding junk food.

Here is the girl version of the picture for brushing teeth. It really is a great chart to get children to learn to properly brush their teeth, but I also made matching 3-part cards that match the charts.
The 3-part cards are perfect for remembering the right order and learning to read the steps. My children use them (the boy version and the girl version) side by side to put them in order. They love it!
Clean Your Teeth
These cards are awesome in helping all children, including children with autism. After using this set, show your child how to hold the floss tightly at a 45-degree angle and reach down to the gum line or get them the easy, handheld floss holders.
And tell them, “Don’t forget to brush your teeth with a soft bristled brush, floss your teeth with dental floss and brush your tongue!”

Here are some resources to teach proper tooth brushing and keeping teeth healthy. Their toothbrush bristles need to be soft. By the way, you don’t have to get fluoride toothpaste for kids for optimal oral health.
Homeschool Printables: Brushing Teeth Chart and 3-Part Cards
It is important that we encourage children to learn how to keep their teeth healthy and cavity-free, as well as avoid tooth decay. They will brush their teeth to remove plaque and food particles on all chewing surfaces of the teeth.
When children are brushing their teeth, they will be more aware of reaching all of the unthought-of areas, like the backs of teeth to get them clean. To get these printables, add this to the cart, follow the instructions and the file will be sent to your email inbox. Enjoy!
