As my children started to get those teeny tiny tooth buds in their gums, I started using a rubber brush to keep their teeth clean.
But as they got older, I would let them try brushing their teeth without supervision.
Now that they are 5 and 7 years old, I make sure they know exactly how to brush their teeth where their mouths will be germ-free as much as possible.
In this post, we will be sharing the specific steps to brushing teeth for children using a brushing teeth chart and 3-part cards.

Steps to Brushing Teeth for Kids
We read several books about brushing teeth with the kids and we loved this one the best.
It was fun imitating different animals like a chimp and a shark brushing their teeth and flossing daily.
What we loved the best was that this was such a fun pop-up book!
And it went perfectly with our lesson on dental hygiene and the steps to brushing teeth properly.

Steps to Brushing Teeth
So, speaking of the proper brushing of teeth, I made a boy chart and a girl chart with the 10 steps to brushing teeth + pictures.
The child begins with yellow-looking teeth and as the child brushes different parts of the mouth, the teeth look whiter and whiter.
This tooth brushing visual steps chart is laminated by the bathroom sink.
It helps my children to remember the steps because you aren’t brushing your child’s teeth forever.
They need independence in this task because they can easily follow the steps in brushing teeth with pictures to remind them (especially if they don’t read yet).
The goal is to brush all of their teeth, front and back and not only their front teeth.
My daughter is 5 and she is learning to read, so the images remind her of the steps.
My son is seven, so he can read the description for ever step under each image.
Since they usually brush their teeth at the same time, they help each other keep track of the steps and check each other.
Teeth Brushing Steps Picture Books
The books below will paint a great picture of brushing teeth properly, so I recommend reading a few to your kids.
Mine really enjoyed the stories and the different characters, but all the stories just repeated and reiterated the same themes:
maintaining good dental hygiene, taking care of our teeth and avoiding junk food.

It really is a great chart to get children to learn to properly brush their teeth, but I also made matching 3-part cards that match the charts.
The 3-part cards are perfect printable tooth brushing steps for remembering the right order and learning to follow the order of the steps.
My children use them (the boy version and the girl version) side by side to put them in order.
They love it!

And tell them, “Don’t forget to brush your teeth with a soft bristled brush, floss your teeth with dental floss and brush your tongue!”
