Once you have asked “What is erosion?,” “What is weathering?” and “What is the difference between weathering and erosion?,” you have another question to ask.
What does deposition mean? Come see all that we’ve learned, and of course the great books we’ve discovered along the way!
Don’t forget to check out our awesome hub for all kinds of erosion, weathering and deposition printables and activities!
What Is Deposition?
Deposition is the process by which the sediments of erosion are DEPOSITED or LAID DOWN in a new location.
Both the erosion and deposition processes help to change the way the surface of the Earth look over time.
The natural forces that that move, or erode, sediments are the same ones that deposit them.
Four Main Agents of Deposition
There are four main agents of deposition: glaciers, gravity, wind, and water.
Deposition by glaciers happens when glaciers pick up sediment and move the sediments elsewhere.
Gravity also acts as a major type of deposition because rocks and sediment can tumble downhill. An example would be rock slides down a mountain.
Wind will pick up lighter forms of sediment and deposit it in another area. An example would be how the wind creates sand dunes in the desert.
Water is the main form of deposition as it can deposit rocks and sediments in many ways including: streams, runoff, and ocean waves.
Examples would include the deltas at the end of a stream or the sandy beaches created by waves.
Effects of Deposition
Erosion is what causes Deposition or the deposit of sediment in a new area. This can be both destructive and beneficial.
It is destructive in that entire mountain sides can be relocated to the base of a mountain, and beaches can be washed away and relocated.
This can cause problem for people and wildlife that may live in an area where erosion and deposition happen.
Deposition can also be beneficial because new landscapes are created including hills, valleys, and coastlines.
The action of the Nile River in ancient Egypt is one of the best examples of how deposition can positively affect people.
The Nile flooded, every year, depositing silt throughout the land closest to the river.
This caused the land to become fertile and thus able to produce bountiful crops for the ancient Egyptians.
Is Deposition The Same As Weathering or Erosion?
No, weathering is the BREAKING DOWN and loosening of rock and soil into smaller pieces.
Erosion is the process of MOVING rock or soil.
Deposition is the process in which sediment or soil is laid down or ACCUMULATES in NEW LOCATIONS.
