You’ve watched the documentaries, read the books, and talked to your friends who have made the switch. And now you’re ready to try veganism for yourself. Congratulations! Deciding on ditching animal products is a big deal.
But before you jump headfirst into a plant-based lifestyle, you should know a few things to make sure your transition is as seamless as possible. Here are tips for making your transition to veganism more accessible.

Do Your Research
The first step to making any significant lifestyle change is doing your research. And this is especially true when it comes to veganism. There is an endless amount of information available on the internet, so take some time to read up on what it means to be vegan. This will help you better understand what you can and can’t eat and give you some ideas for vegan recipes to try.
Find Some Vegan Friends
It can be helpful to have some friends who are already vegan. They can offer support and advice and be an excellent resource for finding vegan-friendly restaurants and products. If you don’t know any vegans in real life, there are plenty of online communities you can join. A quick search on social media or Reddit will lead you to many supportive groups full of people who are happy to answer any questions you might have.

Make a Plan
One of the biggest mistakes people make when transitioning to any new diet is not having a plan. Going into it without any idea of what you’re going to eat is setting yourself up for failure. So take some time to meal prep or figure out your go-to meals for the first few weeks. This will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed or resorting back to old habits out of sheer convenience.
Start Slow
There’s no need to go from eating meat and dairy three times a day to be a full-fledged vegan overnight. It’s probably not even realistic or sustainable in the long run. So take your time and ease into it by slowly cutting out animal products one at a time. For example, start by giving up meat one day a week, then two days a week, etc., until you’re comfortable going without it altogether. The same goes for dairy and eggs—take it slow and let your body adjust gradually.

Be Patient with Yourself
Making any significant lifestyle change is hard, so cut yourself some slack if you make a mistake or have trouble sticking with it at first. It takes time to develop new habits, so don’t beat yourself up if you accidentally eat something non-vegan or find yourself craving animal products from time to time—it happens! Just remember why you decided to go vegan in the first place and keep trying until it becomes second nature.
Find Some Great Vegan Restaurants
One of the best parts about veganism is trying all the fantastic plant-based foods. And one of the best ways to do that is by dining out at vegan-friendly restaurants like even finding Vegan at Chipotle.
Deciding to ditch animal products and go vegan is a big step—but it doesn’t have to be daunting! With a bit of planning, preparation (and patience), anyone can successfully transition to a plant-based lifestyle. Just remember these seven tips: do your research, find some vegan friends, make a plan, start slow, be patient with yourself, find some vegan role models, and enjoy the process!
