Yes, this post is about insects. Well, two insects: an ant and a bee. They are friends and go on adventures. The books we used for this post are fiction, but oh so much fun!
The activities that we did in this post target several skills and subjects, not just insects. Come take a look and make sure you grab the two sets of free printables we’ve got for you!
And don’t forget to see our book list hub! It is full of lists of books on all kinds of topics on all subjects! You will love it and find it very helpful!
First of all, we studied about these two insects using insect replicas.
We learned that insects like ants and bees have three body parts (head, thorax and abdomen), they have six legs and many other facts like stings and bites, carrying immense amounts of weight and how honey is made.
Sight Words
Meet Ant and Bee. They are in the three little books we enjoyed reading. You can see the covers of these awesome books in the picture below.
The blue and white book is very helpful in teaching pre-writing and sight words.
As they narrate their adventure, they show a new sight word and picture of that word on each page in this book. It was great showing my 4-year old who is learning to read.

Colors
The second book we read with Ant and Bee was the rainbow book. It helps teach colors and the new colors that come up when certain colors are mixed.
We had fun going through it. The best part was that they do all the teaching through a funny story interwoven into the important facts.
After we read this book, we used our color cards to practice the colors in English and in six otherย languages.
We also talked about how Ant and Bee mixed colors to create new colors, like red and yellow make orange and blue and red make purple.

Maps
The last Ant and Bee book (our personal favorite) is the Around the World book.
It was fantastic!
Ant and Bee travel from country to country and continent to continent looking for something that got lost.
It was so much fun finding the countries and continents on the map (we used a great atlas).
But we also used our very own printables. We have a map and matching continent cards that you can print and use with your little ones!
Take a look below!
As Ant and Bee traveled, we “traveled” with them, tracing with our fingers their journey around the world on our printable map.
We used the cards to review the names and looks of the 7 continents.
You can find this free printable set of map and cards in the post calledย Continent Studies with Preschoolers.
