Did you know that Appreciate your Dragon Day is January 16th and that the Chinese New Year is February 8th? Well, you don’t need a special celebration to study these mythical creatures!
First, we went online to learn about what dragons are. They are mythical creatures that have special powers. Then we looked at pictures of the giant dragon costumes that are used during the Chinese New Year. Aren’t they beautiful? I couldn’t resist and also liked up a video of the fun display on youtube (they are also called a dragon lion).
We also got some awesome mini dragon replicas that we played with. We made up stories about how the dragons fought each other, how they defended their golden treasures from brave knights and even “shot” fire at each other!
As we played with them and were having a blast, I surprised my children with Lóng is a Dragon, which is a popular book that we LOVE! It talks about dragons, Chinese calligraphy and the history of Chinese writing.
We also learned how to put Chinese numbers on a clock (a paper plate). I am telling you: this is an awesome book! Since my children love to be creative and to color, I made these awesome activity coloring pages for them to color their dragons any way they want. And guess what? These are free coloring printable pages for you! Be sure and get it at the end of this post. 🙂
A couple of other ideas is to get long, skinny balloons and make a dragon like the one in the picture and the second idea is to try dragonfruit! What is dragonfruit?! It is red or yellow on the outside with white flesh that contains many tiny black seeds. It is a little sweet. It tastes almost like kiwifruit, but it is a bit crunchier. I am sure you would all love to try it in a fruit salad!
