This is such a fun series! We have been sharing a list of some wonderful topics every month in our Bookspiration Book Club! Too see our past topics, refer to the graphic at the end of this post.
Today, we have the fairy tale theme and we are sharing fairy tale activities & books that your little girls will love. And don’t forget to see our book list hub! It is full of lists of books on all kinds of topics on all subjects! You will love it and find it very helpful!
We love books! But we love fairy tales the most out of all the fiction we read. For this activity, we read The Swan Princess and The Twelve Dancing Princesses. We love these books specifically for many reasons. First off, these books are made of the best quality, so they don’t get damaged easily.
Another reason is that the stories are wonderfully made, with amazing illustrations. These books also have a great list of stories (that is why they are so thick). My daughter loves to feel the cover as it is textured, with some shiny elements (perfect for a princess wannabe) and she admires the beauty of the books’ hardcover and story illustrations. There is another book of classics that girls would love that is also of the best quality.
Before reading the stories, I printed out the princess pattern set that I made. I printed it in color and cut out the 12 large princess pictures and the 12 small princess pictures on the first page. They are the ones that will complete the patterns on the rest of the pages. You can laminate them all for more durability if you want to use them often. And while I did that, my daughter decided to be a princess, too and went over to put on her Elsa princess dress and Elsa princess shoes.
Fairy Tale Activities
There are five pages with different patterns: ABAB, ABCABC, AABAAB, ABBABB and ABCDABCD. These are repetitive patterns and they will help introduce your child to the concept of patterns. These activities are a wonderful starting point, but since you will have the individual princesses, you can print out more copies of the first page to create more of your own patterns.
My daughter was fascinated to see all of the 12 different princesses that we were working with. We started with the easiest pattern, the ABAB pattern. You can refer to the answer key in case you want to double check what the pattern looks like. Keep working through the patterns in the order I listed above.
She did great and needed the pattern explained once for each page. It is ok if you walk your child through each row if needed. That is perfectly fine. After my daughter was done, I gave her the sheet with the castles and she made up her own story. She pretended that the 12 dancing princesses were having a dancing party at the tallest castle.
She also said that the matching large and small princesses were mother and daughter. She proceeded to match them all up. We had a lovely girly and mother-daughter time. Oh and did I mention that we painted our nails and toenails afterward? We made an evening out of it!
